Since April I’ve been working in my new studio, which is located between Leipzig and Berlin. About a year ago my girlfriend and I decided that we’d move to the countryside as, the way most of my productions work, the studio location has become less and less important during the last few years. Therefore, it made no sense to keep the old studio in the centre of Leipzig. Instead, I aimed to build a new mixing and mastering control room that is acoustically on the highest level and can compete with the best in the world.
Two things were very important to me:
1)The studio had to sound excellent, especially in the bass and low-mid range below 500Hz. In normal regular size rooms with a rectangular shape (like my former studio) you always have to deal with room modes. Those can be treated to a certain degree using certain building and treatment techniques but, at the end of the day, it’s always a compromise. For this new studio I didn’t want to compromise at all. Therefore, the control room was built with a dodecagonal shape and a size of 100sqm that now allows me to listen to frequencies as low as 30Hz without any acoustical interruptions. First room modes happen below that frequency.
2)Daylight. After spending the last 10 years in a typical studio setup without any daylight this was a necessity for the new build. I didn’t want to feel like working in a box anymore, I wanted to see what weather is like outside.
To cut a long story short with this studio a dream has come true.
Therefore, I’d like to take the opportunity to thank:
My dad for all his help during the building phase and dealing with me and all the stress around it at the time.
My girlfriend for everything and the gift that’s going to arrive this November.
The architect of the studio – Fritz Fey of Studioplan. Thanks a lot also for the friendly and uncomplicated attitude during the construction and, of course, the excellent finished result.
All craftsmen involved in building the studio!
The photographer Marko Schöneberg for the great pictures.
All people I had the pleasure of working with over the last few years.
Thank you, Peer
